Here’s another wonderful Toy Newspaper Circular from the good people at Toys R Us, this time it’s from this weekend 41 years ago (ok I timed that part).

It’s a cool trip back to the toys of yester year and while some things have changed, others really haven’t all that much.

Lots of memorable classics such as G.I. Joe, Barbie and the ever popular Fisher Price Little People.

I got a wonderful surprise in the electronic mail box this week with this contribution from Lynch (who showcases his incredible Marvel Comics merchandise collection on his MyEbay page trust me, you need to visit that) it’s a rare poster used for 1970s appearances by webhead himself. What’s even better is the demonstration picture that came with it:

I’m sorry there is both something in eye and I need to change my pants. A Mego carded Iron Man isn’t exactly an everyday thing….

Spider-Man at Toys By Rizzi

Here’s a cool shot from 1979 featuring the webbed wall crawler at the opening of a “Toys By Rizzi” store in Downers Grove, IL. Spider-Man was joined by Bigfoot (not sure if he was the bionic one) but sadly there are no photos of him. If you look closely you can see a whole aisle of Kermit the Frog puppets, yaaaaayyy! I’ve never heard of “Toys By Rizzi” before I saw this photo but I’m happy to announce I’ll have more on them in the coming weeks.

1974 Children’s Palace Toy Circular

Children’s Palace is a well known Toy chain to anyone who grew up on the East Coast, these castle themed stores were eventually bought up by Child World in 1977 and ran until 1992 when they finally closed their doors, leaving many a 70s kid in mourning.
This 1974 Toy circular shows a retailer in it’s prime, many fully colour pages showing all the hot toys of the day. Familiar brands like Barbie, G.I. Joe and Big Jim along with TV greats Batman, Spiderman, Sesame Street, the Planet of the Apes and Rodney Allen Rippey?

Even More Vintage Toy Store Pictures

I’m always happy when I have enough of these images to fill another page. In our sixth installment we visit several toy stores on Halloween (kind of fitting). See a store visit by a giant MonChichi in 1983 and check out the many images from the video game explosion of the early eighties chockfull of Atari and INtellivision consoles and enough electronic games that your head will explode.

Super Sale

This ad for Towers (A Canadian chain of department stores) from December 15, 1980 has some pretty swell deals going for it. Highlights include Mego 12″ Superheroes for $4.95 each, Remco Utility Belts for $3.22 and the Hoth Ice Planet set for $10.50. This didn’t help me much as a kid, we lived far away from a Towers location, however it was the first place I played Space Invaders.

But wait! There’s more including some smoking specials on Mego Micronauts which sadly were being discontinued that year. A Hydrocopter for $6? My grandmother paid full price!

Girl Meets Cylon Centurian

“I suggest you buy that high quality Mattel toy little girl”I’m not sure to put this in the Super Hero Mall Appearance Gallery or Vintage Toy Stores Page because it’s a bit of both. If you look in the store you can see a display of Shogun Warriors and on the wall a display of Battlestar Galactica figures. This is just about the coolest thing I have seen in a very long time, an amalgamation of my two favourite things.

Return of the Vintage Toy Store Pictures

This has to be one of my favourite obsessions, finding pictures of toy stores and aisles past. So I’m really pleased to be coming out with Vintage Toy Stores Part Five with a collection of images that feature classic toys of the seventies including Mego Superheroes, Adventure Team G.I. Joes, Aurora Monster Models, View Masters, Tonka Trucks and of course, Star Wars action figures.If you’re digging this then please check out Part One, Part Two and Part 3 and Part 4 in this series.
