This is probably a mid-90s item, but I still really dig its incredible crassness. More toys should have “FEEL MY SKIN” on them. That’s fun. That head looks like it’s from another KO item, any ideas hive mind?

Dracula Electronic Hand Held Game (sponsored link)

This was a Japanese game called “Dracula’s Castle,” but this is a US release, and the Dracula on the box appears to be Bobby Moinahan.

The original joke for this was character actor Kenneth MacMillan; this guy looks just like him, but who would get that reference? I even had to look him up. He’s in “Heartbeeps,” which probably doesn’t help matters. 

Either way, that Dracula is from New Jersey.

My friend Corey sent me this, and he had the better joke about this being about “The Captain’s Log,” while I just wondered why Michael Cera is there. All of this has Spock especially concerned.  This piece is magical, and I’m better for seeing it.

Archie Bunker Patches (sponsored link) —

I grew up in a post-All in the Family world. I was way too young for the show when it first launched (fun fact: I once thought this was the Archie from the comics all grown up), but I swear Mad Magazine never stopped with parodies and the reruns? Oi vey. These patches from ’72 are a prime example of how this show dominated when it first appeared. 

When I started collecting toys in the 1980s, I visited the backrooms of many dusty variety stores where the Archie Bunker card game was always present, right next to the Bionic Man game.

I’ve opined about these Nomura Star Blazers action figures at great length here and while the seller has the two main characters, getting a Desslock (Dessler) figure is really super duper difficult. I know it took me years to track him, Mark Venture and Captain Avatar down.

I believe this isn’t a retail product but an actual item that McDonald’s employees used to have puppet shows at birthday parties. I only recently found out about this on social media, but I have no idea where that was because it’s just a conveyer belt of information. Let me say this, the Hamburglar puppet I saw in that post needs to come home with me. I’m just not complete anymore without him………

I vaguely recall a TV commercial for this, probably shown during “Uncle Croc’s Block,” which also seems like a fever dream. I was smitten with the idea of transforming someone into a superhero, so I asked my parents for this. My parents were firmly Fisher Price people; this was out of the question. Somehow, this rejection did not inspire adult me to devote my life to Weeble collecting like it did when I wanted some Mego Fantastic Four figures from Heroes’ World.

Mattel Tarzan figure set (Sponsored Link) —

I think this may be one of my favourite ’70s figure sets ever. I mean that sincerely. I grew up with Big Jim, and the Filmation Tarzan cartoon is still a passion of mine. To get my set, I had to negotiate with my long-time friend Mark until 3 a.m in a crappy Toronto airport hotel. Sometimes, the stories become intertwined with the toy, and that’s why we collect.

Mego Elastic Superman (eBay link)–

I think these things are both dumb and awesome. I mean a stretchable Superman may make sense for a Red Kryptonite story but not for a toy. Another thing is these toys were simply not made to last people. It’s like buying something that will break your heart.

Sorry that got melancholy, i tragically lost my Supes to leakage a few years back….

Larami Captain America Pistol Rack Toy (eBay Link)–

I featured this in Rack Toys but I’m working on a presentation about weird Superhero merchandise and this one is a favourite. Cap is packing a Luger, a cover swipe from Captain America 164, and the company whitewashed Night Shade!

70s Shazam marvel Family T-Shirt (eBay Link)

I am always surprised when I look through 70s clothing; there is always a t-shirt or pyjama top that I’ve seen before. Case in point: this awesome Robb Roy shirt of the Marvel Family fighting mythical beasts.

Hasbro Wonder Woman board game (eBay Link) —

Hasbro made three different Wonder Woman board games over ten years; this is the “middle child” landing in 1974. It’s the one I’ve seen the least, and I dig its funky off-model artwork.

A wonderful thing happened today in the Facebook Vintage Toys group I manage with some friends. We got a visit from Mike, who is Mike you ask? He’s the kid on the Stretch Monster box! Mike’s gurning on that package is easily one of the most iconic 70s toy images out there. In fact, he was the subject of the very first PlaidStallions trading card nearly a decade ago.






Here’s Mike 40 years later posing with his now very collectible packaging. How did he get the gig, Mike explained:

He had to mention the prototype word but wait, it gets even more interesting:

“And of course, Star Wars came out the next year. My little brother and I had EVERYTHING. Dad would bring home bags of spare guns. Kenner gave us the “mistakes” as well—figures incorrectly painted—that again, would be worth a lot today if we hadn’t blown them up with firecrackers.

I can remember being at the design studio as a child when they were working on the Star Wars toys, but before the movie had actually come out. An illustrator named John Ham showed me a prototype figure he was painting for a package. They simply called him “Gold Man.” It was, of course, C3PO.”

But other than the iconic box, did Mike keep anything from those days? Just one thing:

He still has the original shirt but as one would imagine, it no longer fits.
