I have a real love for this UK cartoon. Mainly because TVO aired it before Doctor Who, but also because it was a weird show. As an unwritten rule, I tend to gravitate towards 60s-90s pop culture on these posts, but Superman is one of the GOATs of licensing. I love this wonderful depiction of Superman taking a pair of insurance salesmen out for a toot.

Moody Rudy (sponsored link) —

I’ve never heard of this toy nor the company itself but I sure know it’s creator. Art Cloaky created “Gumby and Pokey” and “Davey and Golaith” both shows I watched on “The Commander Tom Show” as a kid.  I love that the package says tongue and teeth included, that’s great value. I’m going to assume the estate of Clarke Gable burned this company to the ground.

Hasbro Inhumanoids Store Display (sponsored link)

I don’t collect this toy line, but I was a teenager when it came out, and I did kind of love it, especially the cartoon, which was so bonkers at the time. I wondered if anyone was paying attention.

Looking back now, I can see what appealed to me: they’re Shogun Warrior-sized Kaiju and that, my friends, spells fun. Not literally, of course but GaiKing would have kicked their asses.

Martin Landau’s collection of Sybil Danning Space:1999 VHS movies (sponsored link)

Ok, this is going to be a long story, but it’s a good one.

In the mid-1980s, two of the ITC Super Space Theatre “films” (which were old TV series repackaged as ersatz movies) were distributed under the banner of Sybil Danning’s Adventure Video. These tapes mainly featured forgotten genre movies, with host segments by Danning herself, clad in sexy outfits, and dialogue that included a bit of innuendo. 

This was essentially in response to the Elvira-hosted tapes, which were selling like hotcakes. Well, Martin Landau heard about it and summoned his lawyer, who requested samples and then sued. The Landau/Bain camp felt that the whole thing disrespected Space: 1999. I have to admit, the prints aren’t great.  The tapes were yanked from distribution, making copies harder to find (trust me, I know).

This is not only the set Landau received, but it also includes a letter to his lawyer. So it’s quite a piece of history.

It also contains the CBS FOX release of Destination Moonbase Alpha, which I don’t think was subject to any legal action. It was a well done release, I still have my copy!

On the 4th of September 1975, one of the most ambitious and expensive Science Fiction genre TV series of the 1970s debuted. Space:1999 was a British production but with US leads hoping to attract an American network. The networks passed, and 1999 came to our screens via first-run syndication. The show was the creation of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, who morphed a second-season concept of their amazing UFO series into its own thing. The enduring popularity of Star Trek in syndication was a big motivator. I’ve never seen these figures before, but they give me a “Palitoy Action Force” vibe (albeit a lower-quality one), and that card art looks a bit like it’s from a horror movie. It’s win/win!

LJN RoadStars Space:1999 Captain Zantor ship (sponsored link)—

I own one of these and it’s on my desk as I type this. It’s from a classic episode of Space:1999 and starred Christopher Lee as Captain Zantor. Seriously this is one of my favourites from my Space:1999 toys. We got a ton of Eagles but getting this cool Alien ship is a real highpoint for me.

Fashion Dolls:1999

I have a couple of these Knock-Off German fashion dolls with overstock clothes from other toys, my favourite being the Denys Fisher Tom Baker Doctor Who.

This one had me at Space:1999 as she is rocking the Mattel Doctor Victor Bergman top but following up with plaid pants. Space:1999 would have run longer if the cast wore Plaid, just sayin’

I’ve bloviated about this set before on my channel (see the video down below) and well, it deserves all the love it gets. I’ve never seen a toy more faithful to a TV series.
