As Christmas time approaches, I thought it would be fun to talk about Space Lego. Mainly because it was often featured in my letters to Santa, but I never got it.

Now, I turned out just fine, Christmas was amazing but my folks would just settle for a regular Lego set. I pined for this stuff from afar.

To get my fix, I would have to visit a neighbour kid who had several of the sets. I was allowed to fiddle with them under his very strict supervision, but he was  extremely controlling.  He was also  extremely annoying and gave me chicken pox on the day before March Break(!) but those brief moments where I got to play Space Lego are very fond memories for me. I was captivated by it’s detail and the amount of fun these sets have. The happy little space men had me.

I ended up with one small set for Christmas 1981 (I believe it’s option C here). As an adult toy collector, I’d always see vintage Space Lego at shows, even an awesome display (See Below) but I never felt it had much room in my collection. I had/have too many interests as it is. I didn’t need another thing stressing my budget. 

However, I married a woman who not only grew up with Space Lego, but it was her favourite toy ever! She began collecting in the late 90s and even though she’s retired, I got to have a Space lego collection, after all, I still couldn’t touch it without supervision but hey, that feels like an authentic childhood experience to me. Below are some shots of her collection when we had it on display in my old office:

Lego has reissued the Galaxy Explorer this year and the price isn’t insane all things considered. It is the toy I fell in love with as a kid and I’m happy to see it back.

If there is any testament to the power of Fisher-Price toys, it’s the fact that many of the items featured here had serious longevity. I had the three bottom items from the Fisher-Price play family series, namely the Farm, the parking garage and the ferry boat before I went to kindergarten and they’re still available for sale when I’m in the fifth grade. That my friends represent some serious staying power in the toy aisle.

The Fisher-Price Adventure People really hit their stride by this time. I had just about outgrown the series by then but I remember really wanting that submarine and squid. However, the siren call of sci-fi-related toys had won me over.

Here’s another wonderful Toy Newspaper Circular from the good people at Toys R Us, this time it’s from this weekend 41 years ago (ok I timed that part). A lot of people don’t know that Toys R Us was around in the 1960s but it’s hard to deny this kind of evidence.

It’s a cool trip back to the toys of yesteryear and while some things have changed, others really haven’t all that much.

Lots of memorable classics such as G.I. Joe, Barbie, and the ever-popular Fisher-Price Little People.

Oh Lite Brite, you were awesome.

In the late 60’s Hasbro switch G.I. Joe from a soldier to an adventurer, these ’69 “Adventures of G.I. Joe” sets were only sold briefly and have since become very desirable on the secondary marketplace. A year later G.I. Joe became part of the “Adventure Team”, the rest is history.

“Talking Drowsy” that should be my nickname…

I found this wonderful catalog from a German company called Spielzug, I remember my grandmother bringing me back some of these and how enthralled I was.


It’s a really great slice of what lucky kids in Germany got, their own versions of GI Joe and Big Jim, as well as Barbie, Sindy, Lego, Playmobil and Steiff.

I honestly remember going to the house of the biggest wiener on my block just to play with that ship pictured above. He was a year my junior and often slapped my fingers if i played too rough with it. I took this abuse, mostly because of the Lego and that even at nine, I knew life was going to be hard for him.

What I love about these sets is the spacemen are just so happy with their toils, everybody is smiling!

This is not the first Lego display my wife has set up in my office but it’s been three long years since I stumbled in the dark and knocked over the castle. I still feel bad about that…
