Ben Cooper Lost in Space Halloween Costume (eBay link)

My buddy Matt sent me this earlier in the week, saying he was pretty tempted. I’m not sure what the greater appeal is for me, Lost in Space itself or that mid-century look. 

HR Pufnstuff Witchie Poo Doll (eBay Link) –

I don’t know what’s more embarrassing, being scared by the boat in the movie or the fact that I’d never heard of these dolls before. They’re amazing!

American Man Doll by Janex (eBay Link)–

The first time I saw one of these, I thought it was a joke. It turns out it’s real; Janex took all the elements of an action figure save for one thing. It was a piece of cardboard with a weird head that looks the kid from “Davey and Goliath” with a beard. Did Davey go to Viet-Nam?  WHO WAS THIS FOR? AGGGHHHHHHH!

1935 Universal Magazine featuring Bride of Frankenstein centerfold (eBay Link)–

I think I came to grips with not owning an original Universal Monsters Poster sometime in my mid-twenties. This magazine produced by Universal has an amazing spread for “Bride of Frankenstein” (I’m not alone in thinking the bride is cute right?) is a budget friendly version that is super neat.

MadelMan Superman set (eBay Link) –

OK, Madelman is a legendary series of Spanish action figures spanned decades and genres. Somehow, they got the Superman movie license and made a series of toys like a Jeep and a Helicopter because Superman! Anyway, this figure is awesome for many reasons, my main reason being it looks like the Turkish rip-off of Superman (seek it out) and also, I clunky stuff!

Mego Superheroes in Japanese Starlog

This page makes me weak in the knees and it’s not just the gem-mint carded Mego Riddler on display. Those Mego Comic Action Heroes’ deluxe sets with the Batmobile and Spider-Car are big favourites of mine. I also don’t have that AHI parachuting Superman.

This lovely ad uses the dreaded “D” word; everybody run! As a kid, I did chicken out of buying a Mego Catwoman because I feared my friends seeing a girl doll. I regret that behaviour to this day. I use the term “Man-Dolls” with sarcastic pride, and so should you.

Toy-Ventures and PlaidStallions present a new line of limited-edition collector pins: Monsters, Knock-Off action figures and Brick Mantooth.

This page contains many happy memories, especially the Mego Spider-Car, Corgi Jrs and those awesome 12″ Mego Superheroes, see below for my video on the 12″ Superman range. 

As a kid, I only ever saw Superhero t-shirts in ads like this. I would have loved a Captain America and never dreamed of seeing a Thor. Strange, now I can’t leave the house without seeing a Superhero t-shirt. I actually stopped wearing them.

The Superhero belt buckles were a Heroes World Staple, as are those Sunglasses by Nasta. The Superhero record case is another old friend of mine. 

I loved those Treasury Edition-sized colouring books of the Superheroes by Whitman and have featured them here before. Those Hasbro art sets are another item I was unaware of as a child.

The glorious Rack Toys by AHI are only eclipsed for me by the Chemtoy Spider-Man web maker, a very happy afternoon of play.

I had those Superhero sheets at the bottom, and I still use them. Amazing how far the Janex Batman alarm clock got, it seemed to be everywhere.

Sesame Street Alarm Clocks

Talking alarm clocks were a staple in the 1970s, with the Janex Batman and Robin set being one of the most memorable.

I love the juxtaposition of these choices, the exceptionally chipper Big Bird would be welcome on Friday but let’s face it, Oscar would be the less annoying wake-up on Monday morning.
