Christmas 1977 is such a unique period of time, every kid in the country had space toy fever thanks to a certain movie. However, no physical toys existed (the cardboard promissory note was clever but come on) meaning it was a golden age for the Ideal Star Team (hastily slapped together to captilize on the movement) and pre-existing space toys like Mego’s Micronauts, Mattel’s Shogun Warriors and Zee Toy’s Metal Man.

It all hit the fan in 1978.

Five Awesome Things on Ebay this Week

Scare Cycles FrankenCycle by Ideal- After Evel Knievel did his little trick with a baseball bat, Ideal toys was left with a very popular toy concept without a theme. Scare Cycles placed the classic monsters on choppers, it made no sense but who cared?

Speaking of weird nonsense on Bikes- Who didn’t want a freewheeling Alan Alda on a motorcycle as a kid? I would have preferred Jack Klugman but this isn’t terrible.

Buck Rogers Playset by HG Toys- I don’t know what I love more here, the toy or that gorgeous Earl Norem art on the box.

FireBirds are Go! – One of the more blatant knock offs produced by Zee Toys, they weren’t even trying to disguise that these were ripping off Gerry Anderson’s Thunderbirds and I love them for that!

Sealed Remco Mini Monster Play Case- I always liked the notion of the Monsters being room mates, even as a kid.

Japanese Evel Knievel

I’m back from Mego Meet and I bring many virtual presents in the form of the sights I encountered there. Let’s start with this, a Popy Evel Knievel stunt set or as they dubbed it “The Evel Knievel Challenge Machine”.

I had to do some Guerilla photography on this one because it had just been sold! Fortunately the purchaser was a good egg and let me mess with it before he took it home. More after the (Snake Canyon) jump!

I couldn’t take the whole set out as it was carefully wrapped but this is totally different Evel figure than the ideal set, Popy made him about an inch shorter for some reason. I assume the bike is also scaled down.

The odd thing is, the box is GINORMAS, it feels way bigger than the US set. I don’t totally get that but also, it’s a really cool design.

I personally don’t collect EK toys but this was weirdly tempting. Glad somebody purchased it to be honest, this was directly next to me.

Ideal Spider-Man Make up Kit

I have to applaud Ideal Toys for spinning the monster makeup kit concept to Superheroes and not just including Hulk and Spider-Man but the Thing as well as being smart enough to include She-Hulk and Spider-Woman on the box.
