Plaid Stallions 18th Birthday

It’s Plaid Stallions’ birthday, and now I can ship it off to college or the army I guess.

Starting this site on a lazy Saturday while my baby daughter napped was more important than I’d ever realized. I had no idea that when I started posting old catalogue photos online. Starting Plaid Stallions would open such an incredible door that would have me make new friends, create podcasts, go back to college, write books and magazines, and even make action figures based on crazy concepts.

None of this would have happened if I had just decided to watch TV, so it ranks as one of the better decisions I’ve ever made.

Initially, I was going to give PS “Five years tops,” but I just kept going thanks to all the positive people I encountered on this journey.

That support and kindness kept me going, and I always found it here during good times and bad; this has been an amazing ride.

So I would love to give out presents on our birthday because I already got mine from you, and so on with the contest!

RUNNER UP PRIZE:

Ten participants will receive an Infl8able Monster in its limited edition packaging.  These are the same figures that come with issue 12 of Toy-Ventures Magazine, but in a special “Rack Toy” package. We’re only making 150 of these with a custom header card by the amazing Peter Carsillo; these will be sold on the site and at shows soon, but you can get one absolutely free.

Let’s have our first contest of the Year, shall we?


 A couple of months ago, I made a bunch of these kitchen magnets made featuring some art I did called the Gentleman Sleestak. 

There really wasn’t a plan in motion but I knew they’d make a fun contest prize.


So, I’m giving away five of these this weekend to some nice folks who post their reply to the PlaidStallions Facebook page or to the Forum at the MegoMuseum. 


The question is:  What thing scared the hell out of you as a kid that you’re now kind of fascinated with as an adult?


I’ll pick five names randomly from those answers and send them this plucky magnet and a mittful of PlaidStallions Trading cards.

 OK, let me start by saying, you made this really hard, you’re good at this.


  Second, I wanted to originally go with “Rectum? Damn near killed him!” before i turned this into a contest. No less than five of you entered that into the contest. We should form a club and have meetings. 


 Third, I’m going to make this a regular thing because i love it. 


 The winner was chosen by me and my 12 year old daughter, who seemed to get the context of this, I’m a little worried.

It took me by complete surprise this week that it has been nine years to this day that I decided to start this blog. 


Many thanks to my then infant daughter for taking a long nap on April 26, 2006  (she doesn’t take so many these days) and giving me the time to begin this journey.


I really have to thank all of you for making this experience a dream, for commenting here and on the facebook page, for writing in, listening to the podcast and for making my book a success.


I am eternally grateful for the friends I’ve made and experiences I’ve had through this site.

Judging by the tremendous amount of feedback I got on my review of Lou Scheimer: Creating the Filmation Generation, I can honestly say I am not alone in my adoration of this once great studio. If anything, I’m part of a mob, it feels pretty great.

Shazam! I never saw the Adam West Batman series much as a kid, maybe twice, so this larger than life show was my first introduction into superheroes. A boy never forgets his first man in tights. I went close to madness to find these on bootleg VHS in the 80s, one dealer tried to convince me they were all destroyed. Luckily the Warner archive finally released these on DVD this year with morals intact. 

Jason of Star Command grabbed my attention every week and gave me an early crush in Nicole Davidoff. The show also featured 70 exploitation film stars Tamara Dobson and Sid Haig, nothing to sneeze at. I can still pop in the Jason DVDs and be thoroughly entertained.

Speaking of childhood crushes, there was a lot to love about Filmation’s New Adventures of Flash Gordon, especially the amazing detail and credence that was paid to the original Alex Raymond strips. As a bonus, their interpretation Princess Aura gave me an appreciation for red heads that often clouded my judgement for the next 10 years.

Upon it’s purchase, my doting Grandmother BEGGED me not to
use it indoors. Which is, exactly what I did and with a click of the trigger, the plane disappeared into a
sea of people in the mall. It’s the first time I saw my grandmother angry. The most recent
time was when I picked up the check at a restaurant. 

Anyway, tell me any memory relating to rack toys, be it
positive, negative, humourous or sad, it doesn’t matter. You’re in. Send them to me using this email along with your address and you’re entered!

three weeks I should receive a small box of advance copies of my book. These
