Super Fly- 5 Awesome Things on eBay this week

Super Fly promo balloon (eBay Link) –

A lot of 70s so called “Blaxploitation” movies were built on their soundtracks, which would be released prior to the movie. Those fantastic records would draw more attention to the film and well, Curtix Mayfield’s Superfly was a massive album.

Space:1999 Illco Radio (eBay Link) —

I had one of these when I first started collecting toys, it always reminded me of Winslow Leach’s chest unit in Phantom of the Paradise. Illco also made this in “Starsky and Hutch” which is super dorky.

Battle of the Planets Princess doll from France (eBay Link) —

I must admit that if I found a display of Battle of the Planets figures in 1978 that only contained Princess, I’d have bought it. My love for Battle of the Planets supersedes the cooties of girl dolls, I know I would have done it.

Early 70s Big Bird Patch (eBay Link) —

I super love the deranged early version of Big Bird merchandise; it’s creepy but not threatening.

Gemini Man Power Record (eBay Link) —

I totally missed this show when it first aired but this record, which hung at “Dragon Lady Comics” for a good decade, was a reminder. It’s about a guy who can be invisible for an hour a day. Mystery Science Theatre 3000 was where I first got to see it.

Mystery Hulk Figure- This thing isn’t a bootleg as it’s marked Marvel and honestly, my best guess is it came from something like a Mold-A-Rama type machine. Anyone know what this is? It’s bugging me.

Golodarak Cosmic Station – Goldorak or Grendizer as it’s known in Japan got a toy line in France that was made up of Hasbro Super Joe bodies and accessories and I guess they even took the Super Joe rocket playset for good measure. I can’t imagine what the shipping would be for this but it’s neat to see.

Jeremy Figurine– Ok, I grew up with this show being called “Jeremy” but depending on where in the world you grew up he was Barnaby or Colargol (which is what my wife refers to him as). This show kind of freaked me out a few times and while I won’t be purchasing this (price seems oddly high) it’s fun when you think of something out of the blue and can find merchandise like this.

Garth the Stretchable Creature by FunStuff-  Septor and Garth were a series of lower cost Stretch Armstrong like figures made by FunStuff. Septor looks a bit like the love child of ROM and a Cylon but Garth is just buckets of ugly. Nobody ever talks about this.

Space:1999 Eagle Freighter by Dinky Toys: I think this may be one of the most glorious toys of the 1970s and for some reason, I don’t own one. The Eagle is to me, spaceship perfection and I vividly remember playing with those little nuclear canisters (which apparently caused issues in the UK when people found them in the street). I need to buy one of these.

PlaidStallions Toy-Ventures Magazine #2 is now available and it’s been called “not only an entertaining read, but it’s also an impeccable work of reference” by PopCult.

My pal Eddie sent me this wonderful page from France yesterday and it’s all the reasons I collect catalogs, a wonderful smattering of what Superhero toys were available in 1977.


A little Mego, some AHI rack toys and a whole bunch of cool as hell stuff we never saw like the Goldarak Action figures!

First of all this thing is like six inches long, incredibly perfect for a kid’s hand.

Even though I have the missile, I have no idea how to make it fire. 

The original owner of this had this as a kid and was obvious a very neat child.

I won’t tell you how long it took to get this shot, please tell me you enjoy it….

I assume this toy originated in Japan but i have no idea who made it.

You of course get tiny plastic interpretations of the individual vehicles and a missile. How did this kid not lose these? I’ve almost lost them twice today.

Everything tucks away in the bottom, thank goodness.

In France, they released this amazing Captain Harlock doll using a 12″ GI Joe body. These were also sold in Quebec, I had one of these in 1987, paid a whopping ten bucks for it.


One of my toy collecting mentors/friends really wanted it, he was a great guy so I traded it to him thinking “I’ll find another one”, yeah I’m still waiting…..
