I recently found this sell sheet (that I believe is from 1970 for a line Remco unironically dubbed “Beaver Patrol.” It was before my time, but it’s so well-designed and charming.

I’m going to assume that a lot of these toys employed recycled tooling. Remco may have been the leading “Label Slap” toy company before the name was sold to Azrak-Hamway in 1973.

Also, I want to highlight the glib use of the word “Mod” on toys of that era. What exactly makes a pup tent “Mod?”

I can’t believe I’ve gone this long without an official Beaver Patrol Utility set! I must remedy this post haste.

I’m not sure how well these toys sold but I’d like to think Remco was also working on an “Official Bikini Inspector” line which included a box of bikinis, a magnifying glass and a rubber stamp. I stole this joke from Bruce McCollough.

The Creepy Elves Christmas Catalog

Recently I stumbled upon this Simpson’s Christmas Catalog at an antique mall, it was a little pricey and had few toys so I considered not buying it until I noticed something odd. There was a theme going on as many of the pages were populated by these two creepy elves.

It was so weird, I had to purchase it and share, more after the jump.

I know this is an attempt to be cute but there is something downright sinister about these two, the backfire makes the catalog a little haunting.

“GOING SOMEWHERE?”

Seriously, who approved this?

Oh my God, now he’s luring kids into his candy house, don’t you people read?

“We’re on every channel!”

Yeah, like i’m gonna eat something this guy offers me, I’d wake up stuffed in a jack in the box.

Wishbook-A-Rama!

Seeing as it’s December (which I’m actually surprised about, seriously where the hell did November go?) and this site is about catalogs, I am launching “Wishbook-A-Rama”. Each week I’ll post different Christmas catalog spreads, some you’ve seen, some you haven’t and we can all make our respective wish lists. This will be combined with the usual Fashion mockery, rack toys and podcastery. I’ll even have a Cyber Monday special for the first time in my life.

Mattel Creepy Feature Promotion

I recently came across this promotional folder from Mattel full of different concepts for stores to boost sales of (duh) Mattel Toys. The one that most interested me was the Halloween specific teaming of Suckerman, Gre-Gory and Krusher into an end cap called the “Creepy Feature”.

While I’m 100% sure this never made it to Canada (*sob*) I’m wondering if anybody remembers seeing this promotion in action?

I can only imagine if it did happen, it would be a good memory for somebody, I mean, look at this thing!

One of the earliest pages I put up on Plaidstallions was about the Mattel monsters including Suckerman, Gre-Gory and Krusher. Watch out for old html though.
