Over the weekend, I found a wonder 1975 newspaper flyer/catalogue from Eatons. For those not in the know, Eaton’s was Canada’s department store chain and a really big deal back in the day. When I saw these images, I felt like I’d seen them before and immediately bought this (best ten bucks I’ve spent in a long time). I’ll share more pages from this but this one particularly resonated with me.

I was ALL ABOUT Mattel’s Big Jim at this time, I had many of his sets and like a lot of kids that Sports Camper was a birthday gift that year. However, the big memory here was figuring out that Mattel was using Barbie tooling to make Big Jim toys. The Big Jim Sports Camper was Barbie’s Country Camper, his Sky Commander plane was the Barbie friendship. I think at the time I felt like I had really uncovered something, a toy conspiracy, not realizing this was obvious to anyone with eyes.

None of this deterred me from enjoying Big Jim.

Take this one for a store called “Hagensick’s Playroom” (great name) in Wisconsin, which features a veritable “who’s who” of hot items for the era.

A lot of 70s gold on this page, Sunshine Family, Remco Magic Hat, Kenner Tree-House and my favourites Aurora Kaaaarate Men!

It’s weird to see Mike Power: Atomic Man wedged in with a bunch of Tonka Trucks, the ’75 Christmas season was probably good for him until Kenner Six Million Dollar man toys showed up.

Fisher Price Adventure People quietly kicked off the 3 3/4″ revolution that would envelop our generation.

The sole Mego item i can find in this is the Wizard of Oz Play set, which makes this the first toy flyer from 1975 that doesn’t have Star Trek toys in it

I have zero recollection of Charmkins, most likely because I was a pre-teen male at the time.

Unlike Charmkins, I remember “My Little Pony”, mostly because I’ve had it’s jingle in my head since 1983!

Space Lego truly was one of the most perfect toys in the universe, why have they not been reissued?

The Fisher Price Adventure people still got a little love in ’83.

Star Wars was still a big deal in ’83 but the finale of the trilogy signalled the end for action figure series as well.

It’s interesting to see how many toy concepts from this era are still widely available today.

Yo Joe! Another long running item from the 80s.

I’d like to see David Hasselhoff on that KITT bike.

I made a very organized pitch for the Vectrex system as a teen, I was shot down with great impunity.
