Atomic Man outfit set (eBay Affiliate Link) —

For that brief window of time when Mike Power Atomic Man beat the officially licensed Kenner Bionic Man toys to market, Hasbro tried to pump up sales by rebranding some classic Joe outfits. This set, which will be expensive, is particularly troubling to me. As a kid I was obsessed with scuba diving, and this was, by far, the single most excellent toy I owned in kindergarton. I can’t afford this, can’t justify the expense but will watch it to the bitter end.

Wizards are most at home in Black Velvet paintings and on the sides of cool vans. It’s a proven fact.

Battlestar Galactica Cape (affiliate link) —

I know the Galactica Warriors actually did have capes, but it wasn’t made of “onesie” material.

Vintage kid’s Dr Zaius Shirt (eBay Affiliate Link) —

This is something I don’t see very often: a vintage Dr. Zaius shirt from 1974; as a kid, my dad drove the “Crazy David” van. So I grew up wearing stuff like this and it’s tough to pass this one up.

Batman Light Switch Covers (affiliate Link) 

I think these were made by Monogram (the model kit people), and they are a cousin to those awesome kitchen magnets. I used to have the Superman version of these. These are another item that straight sends me back to kindergarton; wow, this week has a theme, and I didn’t even notice.

I’m gathering this PVC Jaws was sold at Universal Studios, but it was made by Imperial Toys, who wisely had the license for Jaws merch in the middle seventies. Jaws the Movie and Jaws the Ride are both equally beloved by me, and I want this too.

1976 GI Joe Adventure Team Catalog PageOver the weekend, a friend asked me to help him with toy research, which meant going through my catalogue collection.  That sort of activity is always welcome here as I get to thumb through some favourites from childhood. In particular, the 1976 Simpsons-Sears catalogue. In Canada, Sears partnered with a Canadian firm called Simpsons, and it remained dual-named until 1984. 

I had this catalogue as a kid, and as I’ve discussed, they’ve fascinated me since I can remember.  This page of GI Joe Adventure Team, well it’s technically the Super Adventure Team by this point is one so deeply ingrained in my consciousness it gives me endorphins looking at it.

Though many have decried this era as a low point for GI Joe, I counter with the thought that it depends on how old you were. This version of GI Joe was “My Era” because I was five, and trust me, I loved it. Here are my reasons for it:

Mike Power: The Atomic Man was added to GI Joe a year earlier and was a hit. Yes, he was a Bionic Man Knock Off but I still played with him even after getting the real deal from Kenner. He was a cool concept and those clear arms were super neat. We won’t discuss how he runs with one “Atomic” leg.

As big of a departure Mike was for GI Joe, it was nothing compared to what Hasbro had planned for 1976. 

BulletMan, the Human Bullet, had a bad rap in GI Joe collector circles for decades, and it’s so unfair. I LOVED this character and was so excited about what was next with GI Joe. I was superhero crazy as a kid and they obviously didn’t have to be comic book based for me to fall in love with it. However, to be fair there is one character I didn’t get behind.

The Intruder was a really out-there concept and one I’d love to know more about. Joe’s first real enemy seemed to be more of a minion than an evil mastermind. The Intruders probably needed a leader of some sort, it would have helped. However, the Intruder has one great defence, it inspired some amazing vehicles like the Capture Copter (which I got for my 6th birthday) and the Big Trapper, which is wonderful.

The Ad campaign this year was “The 50 adventures of GI Joe” which rested mainly on previously released adventure sets mingled with new ones all on the new funky orange packaging that still completely hypnotizes me. 

By this time Joe had a staggering amount of items available but this year would also see a new member.

Mike Power the AtomicMan was added to captilize on Bionic Mania sweeping the country and it really worked, until Kenner made us all forget about Mike…

For card #10, I felt the need to do something that wasn’t action figure based, the Green Machine is by far the most demanded trading card so it was an easy fit.

As previously shown, Godzilla made it into the mix because he’s just so awesome. This toy gave me chills as a kid.

Finally, it was time to give some love to the Atomic Man with the final card of the year. While a lot of Joe collectors don’t like this chapter in the character’s history, I cherish it. Atomic man was a pretty darn fun toy, sorry for the curse words…

DVD Releases:
Even though I don’t own a Blu Ray player, this ultimate edition of the Planet of the Apes series is pretty tempting as I love all things associated with Planet of the Apes. So much so that I’ve bought the movies on nearly every format produced.

The extras for this set are pretty intense, lots of commentary, behind the scenes features and little fun things like public service announcements from ANSA.
