While the V television series didn’t last a season in North America, it was a total smash south of the border. As a result, they got more toys, many of which were bootlegs produced locally. I want all of it.

AHI Batman Road Race set (eBay affiliate link)–

I actually owned this at one point and no, it didn’t work. I was left curious if one ever did work, it was pretty shoddy but also adorable.

Complete set of Corgi X-Ploratrons (affiliate link) —

X-Ploratrons was just one of many diecast science fiction lines from the late 1970s, I seemed to get one vehicle from each line and that was it. The Scanotron is on my desk as I type this next to my Shinsei Jeek Tunnelin. 

Toho Frankenstein and War of the Gagantuas Vinyls (affiliate link)–

I’m not sure if these are new or vintage, but wow, is this a big hug from my childhood! Both these movies left a real mark on me as a kid, in a good way as it made me curious about monster movies in general. I don’t collect vinyls (except when I do), and that Franky may find its way to me somehow…

Vicma Sherlock Hemlock puppet (affiliate link) —

I saw one of these recently at SDCC, and like most things there, it’s more reasonable outside of those walls. Vicma was a Spanish Toy Company, and their character selection for Sesame Street Puppets was different than the US. They even made a Guy Smiley! This is what drew me to toy collecting—seeing what other countries got. I love it all!

Mattel Slime with Worms commercial (eBay Link) —

I never had slime as a kid, well, not “official Mattel brand” Slime; I did manage some through a grocery store vending machine (so good!) For some reason, I vividly remember this commercial and really wanting the stuff. In hindsight, this sort of thing is almost impossible to ignore when you’re six. 

The Aliens figure (eBay Link)—

These Shogun Warrior knock off figures came out in the late 1970s and are absolutely charming. I’m personally in love with the logo.

Bootleg Visitor ship from “V” (eBay Link)–

We sure did robbed of officially licensed V toys in the 1980s but wow, did bootleggers try to fill that void. I love these little shuttle replicas and the seller has a whole bunch of options. I’ve also heard there is a segment on bootleg V action figures in the latest issue of Toy-Ventures. I know a guy there.

Black Velvet Bruce Lee (eBay Link) —

I don’t think I really need to explain this; it speaks for itself. For those not into Kung Fu, may I offer you this hilarious off-brand Black Velvet Tweety Bird?

Jaws era Shark Puzzle (eBay Link) –

I can’t honestly tell if I like official “Jaws” merchandise more than “Generic Shark meant to look like Jaws” merchandise. They’re both kind of awesome.

Dr Zaius Bank Mold (eBay Link) –

There have been a few of the various moulds for banks on eBay recently, I guess that’s because they were made in the states. This one is really tasking me, I mean it’s Doctor Zaius and it’s super rare. These are my triggers…

GI Joe figure from Argentina (eBay Link) –

GI Joe had so many looks and iterations around the world, you can see why it was popular. I’ve never noticed the Argentian version of it before, and I love it! This seller has four different figures too. Too spicy for my wallet but I would that I could.

MASH Field Hospital Playset (eBay Link)

Multiple Toy Makers did pretty well with “army man” type playsets in the 1970s; one of their strengths was turning these toys into licensed items. They rebranded their cowboy set into “Kung Fu” and “The Lone Ranger”; their “Planet of the Apes” sets used Army men and horses. MASH seems like a total cakewalk;  I doubt they made a single new item save for the cardboard 4077.  I also want to point out that everything in these was horribly out of scale, and nobody cared.

Also, how many toys have Wayne Rogers in them? Did you know he co-wrote “The Astro Zombies?” 

Black Velvet Frazetta Death Dealer (eBay Link) –

There is a lot to unpack here; somehow, this thing transcends its apparent limitations and becomes incredible. It’s Crud-Tacular!

Captain America “Jailhouse Lock” Rack Toy (eBay Link) –

I want to say that whoever called this “Jailhouse Lock” deserved an extra five in their pay envelope that week. My favourite thing about this weirdness is the padlock, imagine being stuck in a cell with the only thing you see is the smug gaze of the Falcon. Also, I would have bought this as a kid because it had Falcon on it. You’ve won this round Larami!
