My introduction to this line was a comic book ad, sadly the comic was 3 years old at the time. So, I never saw them as a kid, but that ad has always given me an appreciation for these crude, early 70s attempts ata 3 3/4″ toyline. I’m not much of a military toy guy, the exceptions being soldiers fighting giant spiders or, I guess, when the general happens to be a Gorilla or a skeleton. There has got to be some sci-fi or horror there for me.

Back on subject, I’ve never seen this SWAT set before, and hey, it’s really tempting. Also, no sleeves for the SWAT; the M-16s aren’t the only guns they brought.

I have never seen this wonderful horror shirt from the early 70s, and it took me like three passes to even notice the Morbius from the Spider-Man comic swipe. It’s like walking around with every “Night Gallery” on your chest….

Star Wars inspired Sleeping Bag (sponsored link) —

So my friend Courtney sent me and a really cool Star Trek Sleeping bag which forced me to choose. I chose this one because….space tugboat. We’ve got the Pod from 2001 and 2R-2D over there and then what I sincerely hope is a nod to Quark. Tell me if I made the right call, I seriously need a win.

Grizzly Iron-On Transfer with Neal Adams art (sponsored link) –

I am lukewarm on the movie (although a big fan of the genre), but the merch is awesome. I learned from this Iron-On seller that the poster art was Neal Adams, and I’m not sure I knew that before.

Kicking off Monster Season with cheap toys

A tiny King Kong and a cheap-o blow-moulded Skeleton got out of my Antique mall dreams and into my car.

My latest pickups are a perfect example of why I love October so much. ChAeap-OH MonSteR StuFf!!!!!!!
The King Kong is a smaller replica of the Imperial Kong, which I happily own, but I love his goofy expression and the “Super 7 Godzilla” figure size.

The Skeleton is 8″ tall and super fragile, his left hand says “Made In” and the Right says “Hong Kong” so I’m thinking 80s? I don’t care, these two were $25 Canadian, well spent.

If anyone knows where this cool skeleton originated, PLEASE tell me!

Oh, and happy Spooky Season! More monster crap to follow!

PS: I also bought one of those “Cracked Magazine” horror specials, I can’t stop….

Today’s ShockTober subject is this beautiful Hong Kong Trade ad from 1983 for the Mei Bong Latex Co. I’m positive the company didn’t want to suggest their product was Horrible but likely meant “Horrifying,” but well, here we are.

I also need to track down that green Dracula mask, as it’s the spitting image of the Lincoln Monster Dracula.

ShockTober at PlaidsStallions all October

It’s October, and that means it’s “ShockTober” at Plaid Stallions. We’ll be posting Halloween and monster-related items all month, including toys, rare advertisements, videos, and, of course, two horror-themed episodes of Pod Stallions.

To kick things off, I present my latest pick, the King Kong Jiggler by Ben Cooper. I don’t know what it is about the 1976 Kong Poster, but it just gets to me—way more than the actual film itself! Seeing that little rubber jet in his hand just sent my brain into “Buy It Now” mode before I knew what hit me. I also will admit that its price was a winning factor.

70s Karloff Frankenstein Poster Promotion

What I love about Matt’s contributions every Halloween is stuff like this. I’ve never heard of this Frankenstein Poster promotion from the early 1970s and well, it’s awesome. Take it away Matt!

“Large 1970s cardboard Newspaper Advertising Sign for Boris Karloff poster”

“This cardboard advertising sign was created to be displayed on the side of newsstands which carried the Chicago American newspaper.

The Chicago American was an afternoon tabloid-size newspaper which was published in Chicago from 1900 until 1974.

The Chicago Tribune group acquired it in the 1950s and continued publication under its own banner until it ceased publication.

This large cardboard sign is 26″ x 42″, making it slightly taller than the standard one-sheet movie poster.

The Chicago American would, as an enticement to readers, offer a quad-folded poster in the center of the newspaper, And would depict famous stars of the day. They would make posters of Marilyn Monroe, the Beatles, Frank Sinatra and the rat pack, famous baseball players, etc. As far as I know, this is the only time they made a poster of a monster, or produced an advertising display to generate public interest.

As my friend Raymond Castile so it’s rightly pointed out when I showed him this advertising cardboard sign:

“Just imagine a newspaper editor, 40 years after a movie came out, using a monster character to increase sales. It seemed almost unthinkable today'”

Indeed it does.
I believe this poster is circa 1971
Or 1972
Halloween fell on Tuesday in 1972, so that might make this more likely
