While the newspaper flyer has yet to be replaced in this digital age and I admit I still check the Christmas toys out, it’s just not as cool as when I was eight. That’s why I thought it would be fun to see the toys on sale at K Mart during this week thirty one years ago.Lots of familiar faces and forgotten sights in this one including Tonka Trucks, Play Doh, Fisher Price Little People and the World’s Greatest Superheroes! 1974 Children’s Palace Toy Circular

Children’s Palace is a well known Toy chain to anyone who grew up on the East Coast, these castle themed stores were eventually bought up by Child World in 1977 and ran until 1992 when they finally closed their doors, leaving many a 70s kid in mourning.
This 1974 Toy circular shows a retailer in it’s prime, many fully colour pages showing all the hot toys of the day. Familiar brands like Barbie, G.I. Joe and Big Jim along with TV greats Batman, Spiderman, Sesame Street, the Planet of the Apes and Rodney Allen Rippey?

Fighting Furies ad from 1975

I really dig this UK ad for the highly underrated Matchbox Fighting Furies figures, mostly because it gives you a drool worthy shot of the display box. In the US, for some reason the spokesperson for this line was Mason Reese (no fooling, check it out here) Matchbox also released a killer playset for this line that I really should own.

Holy Diecast Batman!

Another bit of vintage toy industry advertising. Growing up, Corgi Jrs were some of the coolest diecast around, not only because of their Superhero lines (I still have my Batmobile and Batcopter) but because they seemed to license almost every cool car from TV and movies including James Bond and Starsky and Hutch. Hopefully I’ll do more on these later…
