I was on a bunch of these as a kid, they all moved when you were swinging like they may just fall over, it gave the whole thing an added sense of danger.

Also, those slides became deadly come July.

PS Reader Murilo sent in these pictures from Ana Lidia Park in Brazil, where 70s playgrounds still stand and in great condition. Let’s explore:

This is a pretty deluxe rocket set if I do say so myself.

This is Cinderella’s pumpkin carriage (Model 155-422) from this catalog.

And this looks like the old Woman’s shoe from the same catalog.

This is like walking back in time, if I ever get to Brazil, I’m heading here before the beach. Thanks Murilo!

Giganta is alive and well in Texas

I got a happy email this week in the form of this photo from Cory, who showed me that a vintage Giganta is still in good condition and being enjoyed in Benbrook Texas. I featured Giganta on the site a couple of years ago and it’s awesome to see one survived the polyester decade.

Occasionally folks do send me shots of vintage playground equipment still in use but they’re usually sad shells of their former selves or about to be dozed, so it’s really great to see one still providing smiles. Rock on Giganta!

Fun on Wheels

I’ve talked about the “Swim Mobile” in the past, growing up semi rural I had no idea such thing existed, I was even more surprised to see what other roving entertainment centers were available to those in the inner city.

The teen canteen provided entertainment, hot dogs, soft drinks and a possible place to score pot from a friendly musician!
Aw yeah, it’s time for neighbours to let out their frustrations on each other with the roving “Boxing Mobile”. They should totally bring this back, I’d go all MMA on my neighbour Doug for his noisy ass mower.
It’s a big truck full of Roller Skates and they just hand them out to any kid! Imagine the sadness you’d feel as you see the Skate Mobile pull away while you’re tending to your numerous cuts and scraps.
It’s a roving playground complete with slides, a functional basketball net and swings. I’d feel weird living in a place where the park drove away at night…
Finally there’s the most logical and functional of them all. Not as flashy as the others but my goodness, an idea that will never go out of style..

Time to pay tribute again to those wonderful bits of metal pipe that gave us thousands of hours of joy and are likely rusting in a scrap yard by now.

The past I’ve focused on specific themes like the ever popular Spaceship or Story books but this one is just plain old funky playground equipment, a lot of fun things can be found.

Props to Myspace pal “The Comatose Boy” for these amazing pictures from Grand Junction Colorado where the remanants of an old school rocket park can be found. THe top of the rocket is now closed to the public, but tell me that isn’t cool.

Retro Playgrounds Part 2: Story Book Themes

Another return to the retro play ground this time our adventures are grounded to Earth but they are no less fantastic. Journey now to Story Book Themed Playgrounds. Castles, Giant Shoes and Spiders all draped with a little bit of 70’s funk.
