GI Joe Dangerous Assignment Game (sponsored link) —

This is easily one of my bigger grails, a board game based on the GI Joe Adventure team when I was five years old. I love absolutely everything about this, but when it does show up, it’s a bad time, like the Holidays during a 3-week mail strike. Yay!

UPDATE: I know it sold but it’s still worth talking about.

If I have a rack toy weakness, it’s little soldier-type figures like this. I can use them for my “Dawn of the Dead” diorama!

Mexican Big Jim Zorak by Cipsa (sponsored linkage)-

It’s incredible how much torment vintage cardboard and cellophane can bring upon a person who has incredible luck with Big Jim this year, but it’s haunting me a little.

Hasbro got in on the Marvel lady power by releasing this and Spider-Woman paint sets in 1980. They are hard to find and are also incredible looking.

Big Jim Motorcross Honda

Picked up this oddity at last month’s Kane County toy show. It’s the regular Big Jim Honda bike that was released for a couple of years but for some reason it’s got the Pack logo emblazoned on it.

This isn’t a sticker either, it’s printed on the box. The best I can figure this is a transitional piece released before the P.A.C.K vehicles had been devised.

I have limits on what I buy and I don’t actively collect the All Stars line but this sort of crept in. Also, when I picked it up the dealer automatically kicked 25% off his posted price without me saying a word. That kind of tactic works really, really well on me.

Filming a Big Jim Commercial

Just found this cool still of behind the scenes of filming the Big Jim P.A.C.K Beast commercial, you almost never see stuff like this but the main reason I like this is that it means there are commercials for Big Jim’s P.A.C.K out there!

One of these days I will track these down, mark my words…

Bozo gives away Mattel Toys

I’m loving this 1976 press release about Bozo and Mattel, a lot of the things being given away are really collectible right now. Of course my favourite of the shot is the Big Jim P.A.C.K Beast that is front and center.

Look at that sweet Jack Kirby Goodness, all toy companies should have had the king do at least one package for them…

Dr. Steel Trading Card

Card #19 is Big Jim’s “greatest challenge” Dr. Steel. I still remember seeing the commercial for the first time as a kid, I was in my parents room watching Gene Roddenberry’s “Planet Earth” on the black and white one Saturday afternoon when it aired. Big Jim had an enemy? He has a silver hand and dragon tatoo? I need this!
I pretty much ran to my mother that instant and proclaimed my love for Dr Steel. Upon actually seeing him on a store shelf however, my mother denied me the good Doctor because he was bald and had a tattoo. A few months later, I was allowed a “Torpedo fist”, a man with an eye patch, a wooden arm and a tattoo on his hand. Even at five, I wanted to point out my mother’s hypocrisy but figured she’d return it to the store if I said anything and Torpedo Fist was really cool so I just treated it as if I had somehow fooled her.

P.A.C.K Attack

Big Jim’s P.A.C.K has always been a grand obsession of mine although space issues forced me to part with much of my collection years ago. The carded outfits (like the SWAT set pictured here) are especially large and hard to display.

The Swamp Boat pictured here is difficult to find especially boxed, there is also a P.A.C.K version of the dune buggy that is extremely uncommon boxed.

For years I used to think of Double Trouble Jim and Zorak as kind of silly but now they’re just about my favourites, funny how that works. The face changing effect is strange for Jim because the angry face looks like he’s having a heart attack.

This illustration for Torpedo Fist’s arm is a little weird, love that airbrushed elbow. The P.A.C.K carrying case has a little locker inside, where no doubt the boys discuss weekend plans before punching out for the day.
