It’s sadly looking like the end for Toys R Us in the United States, so let’s go and focus on when it was a growing company that made for an amazing experience.

This Flyer from 1980 is so jam-packed with late 1970s pop culture that every page seems to have some Incredible Hulk or Wonder Woman merchandise tucked in there somewhere, it’s a real trip!

Colouring Book Theatre: Mork from Ork: An Outer Space Activity Book

Mork from Ork: An Outer Space Activity Book (1979), Grosset and Dunlop.

This month I received a box of joy from Tracy, who generously donated some colouring books so that I could share them with the world.

I thought I’d open with this remind of when “Mork Mania” briefly swept our landscape, distracting briefly us from Roller Boogie and .

This book also serves as a bit of a redemption for artist Tony Tallarico, who was last mentioned in this oddity, as it shows he was fully capable of drawing likeness.

The book itself is largely a collection of photos, (semi lazy) pages of just signs but when they do show Mork it’s a decent Robin Williams likeness.

Mork is never not shown in his space suit, suggesting that early publicity photos were all that was given to the artist.

This book is also (unforgivably) 100% Conrad Janis free, perhaps it’s greatest flaw….

However, Mindy makes a brief appearance! Like millions, I had a little childhood crush on Ms Dawber. If “girls next door” held a pageant, she’d have swept every category in the late 70s.

When I originally thought up the concept for this site one of the early contenders for it’s name was “Shazbot”. I often use this as a curse around the house, I think my kids think it’s a legitimate swear.

Love, love, love this ad from ’79, all the faves are here, Mork, Remco KISS your face, Imagineering’s “The Face” but the big standout on this piece would be the “Incredible Melting Man” makeup kit by Imagineering. Based on the movie of the same name (which is also a great episode of Mystery Science Theatre 3000) the melting man kit was short lived and now quite desirable to collectors. More Halloween stuff all day!

Vintage Commercial Friday

I’ve uploaded a couple of commercials from volume 2 of our DVD “70s Toy Explosion“(thanks so much to everybody who ordered BTW) and thought it’d be cool to share them today. It’s fun aaaaand so much less time consuming than scanning an actual catalogue.

This commercial for the Barbie Star Traveller is of interest of to me mainly because I swear this is Judy Strangis from “Electra Woman and Dyna Girl”.

The second commercial I chose is for Mork and Mindy toys, I’m not the biggest Robin Williams fan in the world (in fact I’m jokingly trashing him on my other blog today) but I really remember “Mork Mania” fondly. I still want to buy that Egg Ship figure set.

Seriously, in 1978 JC Penney was encouraging young woman to dress like Mork, it’s right in the ad copy! Attempts to revive this concept in 1990 with the “Get all Urkeled up!” campaign failed miserably thankfully…….

Oh how I wanted this Mork from Ork Eggship when it first came out, I love how mattel cleverly reused the Battlestar Galactica body for ol’ Mork. At the same time you could buy Mork gum in a similiar eggship, it only cost $0.50 and placated me.On a side note, I’m attempting to create a directory of vintage toy shops over at the Mego Museum, if you have a local toy haunt in your area and want to share please fill out the form at the bottom of the page.
