Janex Toys is largely known to children of the 1970s for their talking alarm clocks featuring Raggedy Anne, Batman and Bugs Bunny. However the company put out a lot of different toys and concepts (most of them centering around talking) during their tenure and held a good deal of popular licenses.

1978 saw Janex release toys based Superman, Wonderwoman, Sylvester and Tweety as well as going back to the well with the old favourites.

Bugs Bunny Meets the Superheroes Souvenir Book

This is one of the happier finds I’ve had this year, not only do I collect memorabilia from this mid 1970s stage show but it’s a coloring book to boot.

If that wasn’t enough, this item teaches me a little bit about the show itself which is good because I wasn’t fortunate enough to attend as child.

This book gives details into what kind of a show it was, I count 16 songs including a solo by the Penguin. Also, it lists Mel Blanc as the provider of the voices, so I imagine all the Looney Toon characters had their voices on a track.

Let’s take a look at the plot of this show after the jump…

The art is above average, probably mostly swiped from a style guide.

This segment comes completely out of context but I’m sure there was a logical explanation. As an aside, one of the songs is called “Bat Computer” and it’s sung by Batman, Robin and Chief O’Hara.

Adding Wonder Woman to this show was a smart move considering her TV popularity at the time. She actually features in the book far more than Batman.

So, here is the plot of this thing, the Joker and his crew wants to screw up Porky Pig’s birthday party by adding sneezing powder to his cake. Seems like a task a bit beneath this team? Well, don’t judge them too harshly…

BECAUSE THIS IS THE NIGHTMARE FUEL THAT IS PORKY PIG! AHHHHH!
I think I totally understand why the Joker is doing this and officially endorse it.

Batman and Robin finally show up at the end as shown by this swipe from a classic bit of Infantino art. The last panel of the book is Sylvester and Bugs fishing, which I am lead to assume is going to mimic the closing scenes of the Godfather 2.

Bugs Bunny (and Batman) in Space Poster

My good friend, Jason in San Diego sent in this image for the awesome poster to the sequel to “Bugs Bunny meets the Superheroes” show, “Bugs Bunny in Space”. I think i like it even more, especially since it seems to trying to cash in on Star Wars a little bit. I also wonder if they had the same Wonder Woman.

If you saw this show as a kid please let us know and spare no detail, I’d love to know what it was all about.

Bugs Bunny meets the Superheroes Poster

I’ve had this for almost two years but it just recently dawned on me I’ve never shared it here. Things have been slow on the mall appearance submissions lately (please don’t make me beg, nobody needs to see that) so I thought I’d begin a series of my collection of Superhero appearance photos.

This one is probably my favourite and hangs on the door to my lair. I never saw this stage show but the sight of these characters cavorting makes me happy.

I’m also very smitten with the actress who played Wonder Woman, a wonderful casting choice that totally blinds me from the 32 year old boy wonder. More next week!

Desks of Fun

It’s hard to make things like pencil sharpeners and desk sets interesting, I mean they are the gift an Uncle you don’t know well gives you. Having said that, I love this Bugs Bunny Desk set, it has only one superior IMO:

Yeah I’m pretty smitten with the Batman desk set, this is most likely to me getting a Batman pencil sharpener as a kid and being overly thrilled with it. Arg, I’m off to Ebay to reconnect…..

Eh, What’s Up Doc?

I have never heard of this Bugs Bunny Playset before, a Spiegel exclusive, I’d love to entertain the fantasy that it’s some sort of long lost Mego toy but more likely it’s by Dakin or somebody like that. Anybody have this as a kid?

I have whittled away ten thousand hours watching Looney Toons and continue to do so.
