Custom Igor from Hilarious House of Frightenstein (affiliate Link)

I had to put this on because I made it….with the help of some talented friends. It was an exclusive we did for a con we called “Mego North” which was the digest Canadian equivalent of a Mego Meet. It was something I’m really happy I did. I’m not sure if the asking price is the “going rate” for what is a custom, but I’m just surprised one popped up.

I never really got into this show as a kid, but my wife eventually pointed out some of its more camp elements, so I appreciate it more now.

Hunter Rack Toy Set by Largo (affiliate Link)
I used to really dig Hunter as a cynical teen, mainly because the show wanted to be a Dirty Harry. But it’s TV, so it couldn’t really be as gritty when people are saying, “You better pay me my STINKING money, Maaaaannn!” The episode where Hunter goes undercover as a punk is not at “Quincy” levels, but it’s still fun. Also, Fred Dryer was likable and sold the concept.

The only difference between this set and 70s versions of the theme is that the gun could no longer be black.

Palitoy Action Man The Intruder (affiliate Link)

As a kid, this was the only member of the GI Joe Super Adventure Team that I did not have and also, did not request. I mean if one fell in my lap as a kid, OK but I wasn’t all that sold on the concept. Had I seen the Palitoy UK box for this character, I may have changed my mind, they really nailed this kind of thing.

If there is any testament to the power of Filmation, it’s that I could hear the music when I saw this. I grew up on the Filmation Superhero cartoons and it was time well spent.

The Save Frightenstein Contest

Yesterday Critical Mass releasing issued a statement over at Frightenstein.com saying that the show’s broadcast rights are set to expire Dec 31 2009 and so far, no one has picked them up for 2010, meaning the show would go off the air completely.
Being a fan of this Canadian institution, I don’t want to live in a Frightenstein-less 2010. Critical Mass is calling to fans to help by contacting any of the following stations and expressing how you want to see Frightenstein remain on the air:

DVD Review: Hilarious House Of Frightenstein

I’ve already talked about how Monster Squad was one of the big reasons I love Monsters so much as an adult, it seemed fitting in October to talk about another big influence, the Hillarious House of Frightenstein.

For those not in the know, Frightenstein is a Canadian series that mixes one part Universal Monsters, One Part Laugh in and a touch of Sesame Street to make an interesting and sometimes surreal cocktail.

Created in 1971 in Hamilton, Ontario. Frightenstein is a really charming and gorgeously made show, it revolves around the characters of Castle Frightenstein in Frankenstone. The centerpiece of making it work is the comedy genius of Billy Van who plays 8 of the 11 characters including The Count, The Wolfman, The Librarian, Grizelda the Ghastly Gourmet, Dr Pet Vet among others.

Also along for the ride are Vincent Price (yep!), Dr. Julius Sumner Miller (providing the educational segment) Guy Big as the Midget Count (Big was supposed to play the count but couldn’t maintain his voice).

I loved the show as a kid especially the fact that one guy did so much and thanks to Can Con laws (a rule that Canadian Content Television shows MUST be played for a certain amount of time each day) it was on for the majority of my life along with other Canadian favourites like Spider-Man, Rocket Robin Hood and The Forest Rangers. When it went away for a time in the 1990s, I sorely missed it and it became a regular discussion with friends at the pub.

Well, Critical Mass has brought this Canadian classic back not only to the airwaves but to DVD with this great release (actually there are several Frightenstein DVDs out there all thanks to CM) the picture is cleaned up, music rights secured (I’ve always been curious how the series managed the Stones “Jumping Jack Flash” but I always think of the Wolfman when I hear it) and it’s just a joy to see it again. Plus, free magnets! I needed these for my fridge badly.

Two things come to mind when I watch it now, one how much fun everyone seems to be having, especially Billy Van who is amazing at ad lib and two, how wonderfully psychadelic it all is. From Brucie’s peace sign necklace to the Maharishi to the wonderful Wolfman music sequences (check one out here) there is no doubt in anybody’s mind what era this came out of.

Overall Assessment: It’s fun to be back in Transylvania!

Holy Chiller Theatre Batman!

I love this Wards catalog spread, what could be cooler than the Mego Worlds Greatest Superheroes kicking the crap out of the Lincoln Monsters? Look how Shazam just pushes the Mummy aside. Despite being kind of Dime store, the Lincoln Monsters were distributed by Galoob for a while so they got some cool catalog representation.

Speaking of Monsters, the Hilarious House of Frightenstein is now on DVD, in the US you get the syndicated Half hour shows. Canadians get an exclusive boxed set (when do Canadians get anything exclusive?) that includes 13 of the original hour long episodes! How cool is that?
Frightenstein is also on Drive In Classics and the Space Channel currently as well, now here’s my favourite sequence from the show, The Wolfman!
