I have a low-grade fascination with Colour Organs, which always seemed to be in the “Older Brother’s Room” of many of my friends. You were typically never allowed in said room, so colour organs and black lights became shrouded in mystery, and well, I think you get where I’m coming from.

What I also really love about catalogues featuring colour organs is how they have to dance around drug culture. The obvious selling factor is how cool they look when you’re stoned but this is 1970s middle America, so they use words like “Turn On” and “Sparkle Up” to vaguely make their point. For even more uncomfortable catalogue copy, look up “facial massager.“

Oddly enough, I don’t own a colour organ now. I never see them at flea markets and trust me, I look. I would love to make a custom one that looks like Doctor Theopolis.
