Canada’s Superhero gets his first action figure

Toronto, ON, Canada (Dec 12, 2013) – Following his new animated web series, Canada’s own iconic champion, Captain Canuck gets the action figure kids have been looking for since his debut in 1975 with a new release from Odeon Toys.

He’s been on a postage stamp, even the cover of Time, but for decades, Superman had one thing over Canada’s Superhero… an action figure. Canadian toy maker Odeon toys in creative partnership with EMCE toys and Big B Comics are righting that wrong. The 8 inch tall figure which will retail for $24.99 will have the look and feel of a toy released when the first issue of Captain Canuck, by creator Richard Comely, hit news stands in 1975.

“We were looking for an iconic Canadian character for our first release, and I can think of none better than Captain Canuck, ” said Sam Noir, project coordinator at Odeon. He added “I was one of those kids who looked for a Canuck figure on toy shelves in the 1970s, I must admit, we’re pretty excited to be doing this.”

The Captain Canuck figure will be available in 2014 at Big B Comics (www.bigbcomics.com) locations and online at www.megomuseum.com andcaptaincanuck.com.

Brick is Micronaughty

It is with great joy that I unveil the packaging art for the upcoming “Project: Mantooth” figure “Micronaughty”, produced for me by the amazing Tim Baron.

I’ve admired Tim’s style for some time and was happy he wanted to work with me on something. I offered him this project because I knew he’d do it justice and he totally knocked it out of the park and exceeded my expectations here.

I was hoping to have the figure out before Christmas however I’ve had a rather harsh lesson on chemicals and it’ll take me until new year to fix the problem (boo). However, if you are looking for a unique gift this holiday season Tim has graphic novels for sale.

Micronaughty will likely land in January 2013, limited edition of 10. More on this and other figures soon.

Greatest store display ever

Jodi sent in the wonderful store display that she spied in an antique mall. It’s sadly not for sale, which is too bad because i’d be tempted to get it despite the marital strife it would (understandably) cause. Can’t explain why magically being whisked to the Sears Men’s department in 1974 gives me goose bumps (didn’t like clothes shopping then and surprise, still don’t) but it does and these Mantoothian images make me happy.

New from Odeon Toys

I can’t believe it’s taken me a year to get these samples created but these are the first two figures from the Project: Mantooth sub series I’ve been working on. Each figure will be limited to about ten units and have custom packaging.

All of this (and me!) will be at this weekend’s MegoMeet toy show in Wheeling, West Virginia. So if you’re in the area, please stop by this Saturday and say hi.

Micronaughty will likely be the first figure released in the series, it will feature card artwork by the great Tim Baron. I had a lot of help on these little labours of love and I can’t go without thanking Sean Sansom, Paul from Laser Mego for the fantastic reel to reel chest piece and the gang at Cast-A-Way toys for the great advice.

Next up will be “Polyestar: The Ultimate Man of Pleasure”, many thanks to Ed Leung and Stephen Leach for design help on the graphics on this one.

Polyestar features a hand sewn outfit by Theressa Chapko and under his jacket, you’ll find the true secret behind his powers. It’s closely guarded and I owe it all to mad genius David Lee at Cast-A-Way.

I have several other releases planned for Project Mantooth that I’ll reveal in the coming months, each will be limited and will get weirder and weirder.

More updates for these will be posted on the Odeon Toys Website in the coming weeks as well as the return of the Megomuseum Super Collector.

Odeon Toys Returns with Project: Mantooth

I’ve updated the site for my semi-fictional toy company Odeon Toys adding some new sections to help chronicle some of the happenings of The Brick Mantooth action doll, here are a few highlights of what’s available:

Project Mantooth will be a series of limited Edition Brick figures that are based on iconic characters of the 1970s. They’ll be new designs but quite familiar, these will be limited to ten of each figure (mostly cause I think that’s the most I’ll sell of these) Much more on this later.

Manmates are the mad idea of my pal Steve and are limited edition Brick figures in authentic Catalog outfits, the first one called “Purple Heeeyyys” sold out in a day. Check out the next offering “Green Sleeves” soon to be for sale at the Mego Forums.

Show us your Brick chronicles the many fun custom Brick images people have sent me.

It will be a loooooong time until I break even on this whole affair but stuff like this just makes it worth it.

That plus the site now has a link to the store where you can order Brick and his alter ego The Mego Museum Super Collector (which should be back in stock soon), Playsets, vehicles, upcoming comic book adventures and much more.

Introducing Man Mates Fashion Outfits for Brick!

Every once in a while, somebody totally “gets you” and

this is one of these occasions. My pal Steve has whipped up a series of fashions for the Brick Mantooth doll. Named “Man Mates” (after the classic JC Penney series of leisure suits) each represents a different, authentic 70s outfit. Honestly, he not only gets the concept, I’m a little worried about him.

Above is “Purple Heyyys“, the first of many, finely crafters, limited edition Brick Mantooth outfits to come out and there’s more.

The very talented Scott C Adams whipped up this fantastic packaging art for the series.

Purple Heyyys is available for sale right now here but it’s almost sold out, once it’s gone, it’s gone.

Look for more “Mantooth Variants” in the coming months, including a few I’ve cooked up on my own.

Unleashing the Mantooth

It is with great pride that I open up the ordering for the Brick Mantooth doll.

Some important information:

This is just for Brick, it does not include the Mego Museum Supercollector outfit, those will be back in stock in mid August at the same URL. (The mini museums are a pain to make)
This is the first batch, if I sell out, it does not mean I am out of the figure, just out of assembled sets. Every one will get one, the boxes in my garage assure you.
These are coming from Canada and take anywhere from 5 to 10 business days, Canada Post doesn’t work weekends either.
The doll comes as shown, you may or may not have to dress him yourself. This Depends on whether your set was assembled by Gallant (my friend, who lovingly dressed each one) or Goofus (obviously me, who was getting tired and hungry by this point).

It doesn’t have to end there….

Once you get the doll, it doesn’t have to end with you placing it on your desk. You’ve just opened up a world of opportunity in the world of Mego customizing. There are literally thousands of ways you can now personalize Brick. Here are a few online retailers that sell clothing and other bibs and bobs to make Mantooth completely yours:

Dr.Mego.com– We wouldn’t have this figure without Dr Mego and he makes a lot of cool stuff.

Castaway toys– Boots, belts, jumpsuits, even vintage Action Jackson sets that will fit Brick.

Classic Tv Toys– Lots of custom fodder including Brady bunch clothes

If you still can’t quite find that special outfit, check out the Megomuseum forums as there are several Mego scale tailors for hire.

Mantooth: The Commercial

Recently discovered in the basement of Odeon Toys Founder Vic Machismo’s house, this commercial for the Brick Mantooth doll hasn’t seen air since the fall of 1976, when it aired on Buffalo 29 at 3:30 am in between a rerun of “Room 222” and another rerun of “Room 222”. We are happy to unveil this unique piece of toy history.

Many props to my pal Rob Chatlin who lovingly restored the film to it’s former glory, without his help, this wouldn’t be. Hopefully we unveil more Odeon Commericals in the coming months. More updates on Mantooth very soon. Stay tuned, well the internet doesn’t have dials but you get the idea…

Factory Brick

While I shared the Super Collector Factory test shots at the Mego Museum a while back, I never revealed the factory test shots for Brick himself. I put Brick’s production into the careful hands of Paul “Dr Mego” Clarke and I gotta say, he treated my brain child as one of his own. When I first saw this, I got giddy.

No better time to share this photo than now, seeing as Brick is no longer in China but in the US of A. As soon as the Canadian mail strike ends (which as a collector is KILLING ME) , I’ll have him here, ready to assemble. The first 100 or so will be available exclusively through Odeon toys and the Megomuseum. The rest of the run will be available through many fine “etailers” that have expressed interest bless ’em.

There will be a lot of fun side projects with this figure, some oddball ideas that are coming to light thanks to a cadre of talented friends. I also hope folks who buy them customize them and share the results with me. Stay tuned for more in the coming days.
