Blonde Alan Alda Trauma

I’m still going through photos from ZoloCon earlier this month, and I missed talking about a few items. I just remembered why I took so many photos of this at my friend Mark Huckabone’s booth.

The Tri-Star M*A*S*H toyline came onto the scene when I was pretty into the GI Joe RAH toy line, thanks to that wonderful comic. I’m a notorious cherry picker of action figure lines as a kid; I only had Crystar himself, one Muppet Show (Gonzo), and….. Hawkeye Pierce. I watched M*A*S*H episodes back-to-back every day on the little black-and-white TV in my bedroom as a kid (on City TV channel 79).

I can’t say the toy line impressed me at that age. I remember friends taking me to see the “Klinger in a dress” figure in the toy department. We were old enough to wonder why a toy company would even do that. Klinger no longer did that on the show since the 1970s. It was our first taste of ironic humour; these figures almost reached “Love Boat” levels of mockery with my friends on mall trips (WHERE WE WENT BY OURSELVES BTW!)

But I caved and bought a Hawkeye. I thought it would work, but at that age, I don’t know if I was playing so much or acting out the comics. Also, I was 12 and impulsive.

It didn’t work; his grimace ruined every “Scene” in my head. He even looked elated when Cobra killed him. I vowed never to buy any more Mash figures; I had “buyer’s remorse.”

However, the Vehicles looked cool as hell, and I always wanted the MASH Helicopter as a toy, dating back to an early memory. However, I couldn’t abide their “Generic 4077 Soldier Man,” who was not only just Hawkeye again but also a mustard-blonde, no-eyebrows man.

It pained me that the entire M*A*S*H cast, even a simple background soldier, had to be smiling as if the Joker had just visited the 4077 and put Smylex in Hawkeye’s still.

I could live with myself with having one chuckling character, but I was not letting this grinning homunculus into my home.

It’s a silly thing to me now, and honestly, even when I saw that helicopter on closeout, it didn’t matter because there was this new toy line called “Dungeons and Dragons” that, despite my never successfully having ever played the game, was my last childhood toy line. It was perfect for a middle school kid.

My introduction to this line was a comic book ad, sadly the comic was 3 years old at the time. So, I never saw them as a kid, but that ad has always given me an appreciation for these crude, early 70s attempts ata 3 3/4″ toyline. I’m not much of a military toy guy, the exceptions being soldiers fighting giant spiders or, I guess, when the general happens to be a Gorilla or a skeleton. There has got to be some sci-fi or horror there for me.

Back on subject, I’ve never seen this SWAT set before, and hey, it’s really tempting. Also, no sleeves for the SWAT; the M-16s aren’t the only guns they brought.

I associate the Micronauts with Christmas, and every year I treat myself to a piece.

2025 will not be the year I buy Sharkos, I already spent that money (more on that later). Sharkos is a scarce Micronauts Aliens vehicle that was sold mainly in Italy and Canada. If it had a box with Ken Kelly art on it like the earlier vehicles, I’d be more tempted to buy it. It’s always bugged me, almost as much as Antron piloting when Repto or Lobros would be more appropriate.

Wishbook : Simpson’s 1975: Mego-Big Jim- GI Joe

Plaid Stallions wouldn’t exist without wishbooks, especially the ones I grew up with. I’m attempting to bring out some of my favourites druing December. I vividly remember getting this one tucked in the Saturday Star as kid. This is from Simpson’s a long since deceased (but missed) retailer.

The action figure selection is pretty awesome this year with Mattel’s Big Jim sharing the spotlight with the Mego Planet of the Apes and Star Trek figures. I had some of this stuff as a kid and the stuff I didn’t have? I wanted it.

On the other side of the spread, we have the amazing GI Joe Adventure team, my first action figure love, being overshadowed by the “It girl” of `75, Kenner’s Col. Steve Austin from the Six Million Dollar Man line. I was a lucky kid who got one that Christmas, and I enjoyed it for years.

These toys came out when I was in middle school and I remember seeing them at places like “Bargain Harolds.” An attempt to cash in on the Dungeons and Dragon craze of the early 1980s, I found the toys really charming. I especially love this (super rare) vehicle because it looks like a carnival dark ride car.

In the dark ages of Doctor Who merchandise (aka the 1980s), this was the best it got for me toy wise. They made this for two Doctors, as another was made of Peter Davison. That is the one I owned as a kid because I couldn’t get over Tom Baker’s painted body. At least he isn’t grinning though, I really like “Serious Tom Baker” toys.

Vintage Toy Store brimming with Mego Planet of the Apes

In the latest episode of my City TV “Not So Great Movie Podcast, I am accompanied by friends Chris and Lizz, and we cover the classic Canadian children’s film “Jacob Two-Two meets the Hooded Fang,” a 1977 production shot in Montreal.

We had a fantastic conversation about the movie itself (YT link in bio), and it’s a hoot, despite its low production values, creepy character design, and some strange choices.

However, a pivotal scene in the (frankly, wonderfully weird) movie is set in an authentic 1970s Montreal Toy Store.
Which means the leads walk past all the popular toys at the time like Sesame Street Plush and a whole wall just brimming with Mego Planet of the Apes dolls.

The existing print is not great, but you can make out that fabulous Mego Galen figure popping out of the very full display. It looks better when you watch the film on YouTube. Oh, for a deluxe Blu-ray!

Palitoy Talking Dalek: My toy collector origin story

I recently reunited with a piece that, honestly, is why I’m here. I hope the story surrounding it might be relatable.

Palitoy Talking Dalek- PlaidStallions

June 1984:

I’m 13 and have just graduated the eighth grade, it was a good year for me, lots of friends, lots of experiences. At this time I’m a Doctor Who junky and that love is mainly for the early 70s version of the show. I grew up on the Pertwee and Baker eras on TVO.

I see an ad in Starlog that reads, “Palitoy Talking Dalek Toys from 1975: Red or Silver $25 each plus shipping, send SASE blah blah blah.” Although I’m not entirely sure what Palitoy was or what the toy might be, it sounded essential.

Palitoy 1976 Catalogue

Getting a US money order in Canada was once kind of a pain in the butt. In 1977, I presented my parents with a completed “Heroes World” ad for the Mego Fantastic Four, along with all my Christmas money. They told me I’d have to go to both the bank and the post office, and I believe fighting a giant spider was involved; it’s been a while. My father promised to take me to his friends at Parkdale Novelty and find the Fantastic Four. That sadly never happened.

Undaunted by this past obstacle, I went to the bank on my own and discovered it had changed for the US; I obtained a US money order. I believe the whole endeavour cost me the entirety of my $40 graduation money. I threw it in the mailbox in front of the same”Checkers Variety” I would later work at, and played the waiting game.

Did I say waiting game? I meant the summer of total anxiety. I checked my mailbox every day, probably way too soon, but this was the most significant purchase I’d make on my own that year. I also had never done this before!

Weeks stretched into months; I even wrote the seller more than once, asking what was going on, but I never heard back.

Sometime in August, full of Catholic guilt, I confessed what had transpired to my mother. I got the “Don’t tell your father” that I’m sure is familiar. I think I made peace with it around Labour Day evening. I thought to myself, “I got ripped off, it happens, let it go.”

The next day, I attended the first day of ninth grade in a weird public school. My main takeaway is that some shop kid wearing a Judas Priest headband called my Peter Gabriel concert shirt “Gay,” which still makes me chuckle.

I headed home to find a box; it was the talking Dalek. The ad was legit, the seller honest but maybe kind of a lazy shipper? It was better than I had hoped; I loved the awesome box graphics, the toy itself and the fact that it said “Exterminate” over and over again.

Of course I ordered the red one!

This single toy’s arrival led to 4 decades of making crazy toy purchases, learning about the industry and meeting and making friends with some of the coolest people in the world.

Had it not arrived? I’d probably collect something. I’d likely have a lot more money in the bank, but I’d also probably be no richer.
