They knew that all the months of futile begging to take karate lessons were almost over.

Mom and Dad might still cherish their fading hippie memories of peace-marches and they might still genuinely believe "it takes two to make an argument". But after those first hard weeks in September, if their son says karate will end the shiners, fat lips and torn clothes, then karate it is.

Clothing like this is also why so many boys who took up karate in the 70s became utterly vicious instructors in the 80s.
