When I looked at the [trolls] set, on ebay, the page also showed me this [related item].
It's a [Marx [tm]], Mystery Space Ship.

It looks like a yellow, flying saucer-type ship, with some orange, + green, figures. The figures have a style of 1950s "army men"/toy soldiers. The Mystery Space Ship is from 1959, I guess.

Here's the link to this cool toy-

Old enough to remember what may have been the earliest trolls. It would have been the early 60s, when I was a grade schooler, and they didn't seem to have any kind of marketing. Back when toy stores had closed display cases for the classier, usually imported stuff -- Corgi cars, upscale electric trains, high-end mechanical toys -- I remember seeing a group of trolls. No accessories or packaging; just ugly little naked guys with big eyes, real hair, and one arms-out pose. Couldn't see the appeal. Eventually I think my sister got a few, and they ended up as minor players when we played with stuffed animals and such.

In time there were troll/animal hybrids, large trolls with costumes, and tiny knockoff party favor trolls. I faintly remember seeing the playset in the Sears catalog when I was older, and by then was able to wonder if the trolls were public domain. Again, I don't remember commercials, or coloring books, or any of the other indicators of a "real" toy line.

In recent years there was a troll movie I didn't see, so presumably they're an owned property.
