When I looked at the [trolls] set, on ebay, the page also showed me this [related item].
It’s a [Marx [tm]], Mystery Space Ship.

It looks like a yellow, flying saucer-type ship, with some orange, + green, figures. The figures have a style of 1950s “army men”/toy soldiers. The Mystery Space Ship is from 1959, I guess.

Interestingly, that hut in the troll play set is just Madam Mim’s house rebranded.

Old enough to remember what may have been the earliest trolls. It would have been the early 60s, when I was a grade schooler, and they didn’t seem to have any kind of marketing. Back when toy stores had closed display cases for the classier, usually imported stuff — Corgi cars, upscale electric trains, high-end mechanical toys — I remember seeing a group of trolls. No accessories or packaging; just ugly little naked guys with big eyes, real hair, and one arms-out pose. Couldn’t see the appeal. Eventually I think my sister got a few, and they ended up as minor players when we played with stuffed animals and such.

In time there were troll/animal hybrids, large trolls with costumes, and tiny knockoff party favor trolls. I faintly remember seeing the playset in the Sears catalog when I was older, and by then was able to wonder if the trolls were public domain. Again, I don’t remember commercials, or coloring books, or any of the other indicators of a “real” toy line.

In recent years there was a troll movie I didn’t see, so presumably they’re an owned property.
